"This piece was originally conceived as holograms relating to my dreamtime experiences of 'old Europe', the post WWII bombed out Europe, the Surrealist Europe, the Europe of past shadows and memories in/of infancy - hence 'back to the basics' and 'dreamtime in the ruins'.

The design and creation of several versions of this work began with outlines - sketches (Auto Cad) based on surrealist sources (deChirico, Dali) and other found and imagined architectonic forms I assembled in image collections. The arrangement of the facades, and their shadows, is my dream work. The fabrication of the outdoor installation sculpture (currently installed in Baja, Mexico) and its holographic table version (used in Light Impressions hologram masterin work) are precursors to a complete sculptural and hologram installation which superimposes aspects of the holographic and 'real' (sculptural) both in 'object' and 'shadow' with installation-specific results. The venue and date for this complete installation yet to be arranged.

This piece is not a mimetic statement confering holographic 'authenticity' to the recording process. It is not 'holograms for the purpose of imitation' (fidelity to the subject matter). This piece is about the interplay of the holographic and the physical refence (sculpture) in its many forms. I hope the techno-mimetic holographers got that." (A.R.)

Escher Falling by Al Razutis 2007

Mixed-media - Hologram and lamination graphic, 20 x 24 in.
Sculpted scene created from M.C. Escher drawing; hologram mastered at Laser Reflections, USA
Collection of the artist

"This piece re-presents the paradoxical perspectives of M.C. Escher's Another World drawing, as decomposed into separate angled planes and recorded as master transmission hologram using Ron Olsen's pulsed green laser. The holographic image 'sets' the planes (and its perspective) in space, and the perspective translations of the Escher drawing are 're-imagined' within the holographic 'armature', as well as the laminated and superimposed film graphic (the drawing itself on film).

The arrangement of the planes and their angles is spontaneous gesture organized around my personal choices. A achromatic Hologram for the purposes of exhibition is to be manufactured and the venue and date for this complete installation yet to be arranged.

This piece is also not a mimetic statement confering holographic 'authenticity' to the recording process. It is not 'holograms for the purpose of imitation' (fidelity to the subject matter). This piece is about the interplay of the holographic (perspective) and the implied perspectives of Escher and all vanishing point perspectives." (A.R.)
