RECOMMENDED 3D LINKS

Each site below is recommended in ways qualified below (we do not act as agents for any listed product).

Hardware Suppliers:

Most listed manufacturers specialize in field-sequential stereoscopic 3D Video and/or 3D computer graphics applications. Quality, reliability and prices will vary. (We will remove any supplier upon notification of problems.) Our recommended personal viewing hardware, based on actual purchase and evaluations, includes 'virtual monitor' i-glasses, or autostereoscopic (without glasses) video-monitor screens. For the budget-minded we also recommend wireless LCS glasses. Check prices and viewing platform to determine suitability.

Viewing 'Content' Suppliers:

While there is an abundance of 3D viewing hardware, there is a scarcity of engaging 3D content available on the web. If you don't care for intelligent subjects, then DVD collections featuring shlock horror, ride fx films, and a number of adolescent CGI-driven plots (yes, even released in IMAX!) will fit the bill. Most of these are not watchable beyond the first 'experience', and they are usually hyped for their novelty value, and mass-released at 'bargain' prices. '2D to 3D' conversions are typically worse. However, better content is just a matter of time.

This site's preferences are towards innovative subjects and techniques - '3D video art', something more than novelty (ride films, boring travelogs, kitsch horror, more boring travelogs, and FX flicks). We are dedicated to 3D video art (see our DVD prices) and leave the exploitation of gee-whiz novelty content to others.

Cutting-Edge Stereoscopic 3D Displays, Video and VR:

The annual Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference, held in 2004 in San Jose, California presented the most recent developments in 3D displays, video, games and virtual reality. Visit their web site at www.stereoscopic.org for details.

Virtual Reality and stereoscopic imaging are naturally related practices, including VRML, X3D, Mpeg-4 client software for scientific, educational, entertainment and gaming applications. To stay informed of recent developments visit Web3D.org, or cutting-edge vendors such as Bitmanagement Software, Parallelgraphics, or view VR resources at NCIS - site to see what the 3D future has in store for you.

'2D to 3D' Conversions

We receive a number of inquiries concerning '2D to 3D' conversion software for TV and video. Most '2D to 3D conversion' that we have seen in the past was, simply, 'junk' - a novelty exploiting the old 'Pulfrich effect' for the curiously inclined, but not featuring 'spatial' stereoscopic 3D. The field, however, is changing and along with auto-stereoscopic displays, now seems promising. Visit www.ddd.com for current trends and developments.

For basic conversions and stereo manipulation (stills, video) we recommend exploring several shareware / freeware software manufacturers below. For video, see also the manufacturers listed below.

Virtual Library

For those seeking information on '3D techniques' (and 'how do I shoot 3D film'...) a Virtual Library has been established as "the new online repository of selected Stereoscopic Imaging publicatons". This library is maintained by Andrew Woods, and contains, among other publications "Foundations of the Stereoscopic Cinema" by Lenny Lipton. Visit the Virtual Library webpage to download a free copy of this book at: http://www.stereoscopic.org/library.

A comprehensive list of many models of LCS GLASSES and manufacturers, plus informative pages on viewing - projection technology are also posted at Christoph Bungert's excellent STEREO 3D.COM site.

'BEYOND STEREOSCOPIC 3D?':

HOLOGRAPHIC ART

"...to be 3D or not 3D"

A Meta-Critical Sidebar On this very caterpillar subject...

ALICE AND THE CATERPILLAR:

"I am perplexed!"  said ALICE to the 'fractal-patterned' CATERPILLAR, who by now was almost totally enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke emanating from his hookah.

"What EXACTLY do you mean by that?" said the Caterpillar, looking about.

What Alice saw of the caterpillar... - click to enlarge

"Well, when I look at YOU with these FUNNY GLASSES, you appear to be made out of cardboard! A bit stranded between background, and foreground, I would say. And not very REAL, I might add," explained Alice with her usual politeness.

"Perhaps you need your eyes examined?" replied the Caterpillar.

"Oh no!"   cried out Alice. "I can see perfectly well, thank you!"

"Well then," said the Caterpillar, and with a puff on his mouthpiece,  "perhaps you need to see what is here from another...perspective. Something less PSEUDO?"

"There must be something more realistic than..." began Alice, as she flipped her glasses around, then back again..."More realistic than..."

"Ah!"  the Caterpillar cut her short.  "Reality, and all that stuff about 'space'',   is ALL IN YOUR HEAD!"   (and by now, he was quite INTOXICATED by the 'effects' in his own head...and quite quick to prescribe perceptual 'techniques'...)

"Something more realistic than...STEREOSCOPIC 3D and all these funny glasses?"  Alice wondered.

"Of course, if you REALLY INSIST...there is SOMETHING,"  intoned the Caterpillar,   "for you to see in Wonderland, a MOST CERTAIN place to visit...oh, I forgot, what-ever-it-is called!"

"Will everything appear real in this, whatever it is called, place? Will I be able to TOUCH that which I see?" asked Alice.

"Well YES and well, NO,"  said the Caterpillar.  "Things will appear to be REAL, to your way of seeing, at least. And somethings will appear to be QUITE REAL, almost SOLID,"  he explained.   "But you won't be able to TOUCH anything, after all..."  and he began to doze off.

"Wait! Wait!"  cried Alice.  "What is this place, what is it called?   Where CAN I FIND IT?"

"I think....it is called, 'the whole something or other'...ah, yes... HOLOGRAPHY!,   and, come to think of it!, there is of course............ver......mmmmm....al"

And the Caterpillar dozed off, dreaming of wings, of ANGELS, of someday being able to 'fly'...all of which left Alice quite perplexed as to where to find this place called....'holo....something'! , and that place called.....'of...course!'........And then...she reached up...and touched that strange sign, which had become quite HOT! by now........
